Hanging Picture Frames – How to Hang Your Pictures on the Wall
If you’ve ever needed help hanging a picture frame on your wall, here’s you chance to learn how. Learn which type of wall hardware is best to use and the tips you need to know to properly hang your frame.
Once you select your wall frame, the next step is to select the type of hardware you need to hang your frame and choose a spot to hang it. In this article, you’ll learn about the different types of wall hardware and the pros and cons of each and valuable tips on how to hang your frame.
For wall hardware you have a selection of nails, screws or adhesives.
Nails
The easiest and least expensive of your choices are nails. Finishing nails make relatively small holes depending on the size you use. The nail should be at a 45 degree angle to the wall so it is more secure. If needed, use a “stud finder” to help locate the stud in your wall. Make sure that the frame is nailed into the stud and not just the sheetrock otherwise you could damage your wall and your picture frame.
Screws
If you have concrete or brick walls, screws are the recommended choice. They leave large holes and are not necessary, or the best selection, for ordinary wall hanging. When securing to a brick or concrete wall, make sure to use the screw anchor to keep your picture properly secured.
Adhesives
If you are concerned about holes in your walls, use adhesives. Adhesives are becoming more popular and there are many different wall adhesives available, like Velcro strips or hooks. Be sure to check the weight limits for the adhesive you choose and only attempt to hang lightweight frames with adhesives. Adhesives usually don’t support more than 5lbs, so never attempt to hang a heavy or large picture frame using adhesives.
Selecting a Spot for Your Frame
Now that the hardware decision has been made, the final step is at hand – deciding where to hang your picture frame. This process may take more than one person. You really want to make sure the location you choose is the perfect spot, or you may end up with nail holes all over your walls. Your helper can hold and move the frame around as you decide what looks best to you. The frame should be hung about eye level.
If you are hanging the frame with other wall hangings, make sure the spacing is appealing to the overall appearance. If your hanging multiple rectangular, oval or square picture frames all at one time, it is wise to lay all the pictures out on the floor. This way you can move and adjust before you hammer a nail.
Here are three simple tips to get your picture frames perfectly positioned on your wall:
1. Measure the area of your wall that will be used for hanging your pictures.
2. With string, lay out the wall measurement on your floor.
3. Arrange your pictures within that area on the floor and let your imagination run wild. Spend as much time as you need until you are satisfied that you have the perfect arrangement.
Once you are satisfied with your floor arrangement, have your helpers hold the pictures up to the wall to see if it still looks good to you. When you are happy with the placement, bring out the tools (nails, hammer, adhesive strips, screws, etc) and go to work.
Tips to remember when hanging your picture:
1. If you’re using nails, make sure you hammer the nail into a stud rather than just the sheetrock.
2. If you’re using screws, pre-drilled holes will make the job easier.
3. If using adhesive strips, weigh your frame so you are certain it falls within the weight guidelines for the adhesive you are using.
4. When hanging a grouping of frames, always hang the frame in the middle first, centered where you want it, and then work out on both sides. This will ensure that your grouping is where you want it to be.
No matter what type of picture frame you want to hang, by following these steps you’ll be sure to get your frame exactly where you want it and do it with ease.
